A Better Camping Trip

Posted on October 11th, 2011

Family bonding happens in many ways: around the dinner table, watching a movie together, playing board games or charades or taking a trip together. If getting out and about is your preferred style of together time, but sticking to a budget is equally important, consider spending a night or two in the great outdoors. Family camping is a perfect way to move away from the pull of TV and video games while getting a serious dose of nature. And it’s wallet-friendly too!

Like any getaway, a successful camping trip requires a bit of planning, especially if there are little ones involved. Use the following check-list to ensure that your time with Mother Nature is safe and fun.

Choose your destination. Whether you plan to camp close to home or venture out to an unfamiliar destination, technology has made securing your home away from home easier than ever. Simply use the wonder that is Google Maps to secure your spot outdoors. Find your destination on the map (i.e. Amherst, Massachusetts), next type in “campgrounds” for a list of nearby camping options. Be sure to call to reserve your spot.

Think eats. Eating is a big part of – well, everything – but food is an especially special part of the camping experience. To avoid cooking mishaps, prepare in advance. Find out if the campground features grills or refrigeration and be sure to bring enough beverages, snacks and treats to keep everyone happy, hydrated and satisfied. Consider bringing trail mix, banana’s, and granola bars.

Think fun. After your tents are set up, how will you spend your days while camping? Take some time before departing to research local hiking trails – don’t forget to consider the physical limitations of younger family members – and bring appropriate gear for swimming, fishing or biking if those activities are on your camping agenda.
