Keep Your Resolutions
Posted on January 9th, 2012
Kick-start the New Year with the determination to keep your 2012 resolutions. In fact, it's a good idea to make your first resolution a commitment to stick to your resolutions. An iron will, a type A personality or a perfectionist attitude may lead you to resolution success, but there are a several other ways the rest of us can strive to achieve our 2012 goals.
Write Out a Game Plan
Whether you hope to lose 10 pounds or climb Mount Everest, every resolution takes a bit of planning. If you haven't already, use this first week of the year to sketch out a plan of attack. If your goal is to lose weight, go to the grocery store to stock up on nutritious and portion controlled options, as well as researching a local and affordable gym. If climbing a mountain is on your list, you'll have to find the peak, research what time of the year is best for climbing, arrange any necessary travel to get there, organize a training regimen near your home and so on. Make a clear to-do list for each resolution and take the time to cross off each task when completed. View each item as a mini resolution and give yourself credit for each accomplishment!
Work in Teams
As human beings, we work better when supported by others. As you sketch out your resolution game plan, be sure to consider who can support you in the accomplishment of each goal. If you haven't already discussed your 2012 plans with anyone, make a list of every possible person -- friend, colleague or family member who can assist you in getting where you want to go. Your support team can simply be on call to talk you through a challenging spot -- when you're feeling lazy, unmotivated or discouraged -- or they can pursue the goal by your side.
Be Nice to Yourself
Resolutions by their very nature require that we stretch ourselves. Depending on where we are personally, this process can be exciting -- or disheartening. As you work toward your goals, always remember to be kind to yourself. Remind yourself that you are doing the best you can in any given moment and that you always have the opportunity to do better next time. Beating yourself up does nothing beneficial and will ultimately slow your process. Treat yourself like you would treat someone you love.
