Sleep Right

Posted on September 19th, 2011

We all know life is much harder without a good night’s sleep behind us. And while you can’t predict whether your upstairs neighbors will be hosting a wild all-night dance party or if the dog across the street will be barking until the wee hours, you can take some steps to prepare your body and mind for some serious rest.

Create a sleep routine. And stick to it. Going to sleep at roughly the same time every night helps your body create a consistent sleep-wake cycle, which may lead to a better night’s sleep.

Develop a soothing pre-sleep ritual. Watching TV right before bed – especially anything anxiety-producing like the news or scary movies -- may disrupt your body’s natural ability to decompress. Steering clear of anything electronic, that’s all screens: computers, smart phones, etc. – before settling down to slumber – is best. Instead, read a calming book, listen to relaxing music or take a warm bath.
